I was up at a farm on the North End recently and a couple of us homesteaders got to swapping chicken stories.\u00a0 Roosters, mostly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You think maybe chickens are silly little cacklers scratching up worms and grubs for dinner or they\u2019re benign little birds dropping eggs for your breakfast, you haven\u2019t been properly introduced to the male of the species.<\/p>\n
Maybe you\u2019ve heard the expression Cock of the Walk?\u00a0 That\u2019s these bad boys.\u00a0 Vicious attackers of the unwary.\u00a0 Aggressive, fearless birds that come at you with beak and spurs.\u00a0 They\u2019ll open you up before you can say chicken cacciatore.\u00a0 And you\u2019ll never turn your back on one again, trust me.<\/p>\n
Well, we swapped a few whoppers before Professor Bob mentioned he\u2019d been up to Darrington for the cockfights awhile back, a couple hundred Tarheels betting their moonshine earnings on birds bred for vicious violence.\u00a0 When I first came to Camano Island, the cops were busy busting cockfighting rings in Stanwood and Gomorrah.\u00a0 I know what you\u2019re thinking: didn\u2019t this sort of bloodsport die out in the 1800\u2019s?\u00a0 And the answer is apparently NO.\u00a0 Down south where I grew up, they fight dogs in Dixie.\u00a0 Yeah, it seems barbaric.\u00a0 But \u2026 we still got boxing and now we got kickboxing.\u00a0 And if you want mayhem, tune in some Sunday to NFL football.\u00a0 They\u2019ll study us someday like we were Romans, professional gladiators.\u00a0 Only real difference is we figured how to make it profitable.<\/p>\n
Maybe the cockfighters need to sell television rights.
